Alaska May 2013 Summer Academy Institute Agenda



Institute Description


Want to make more of a difference in the lives of each of your students? Come learn from the world’s foremost superheroes how to craft creative, flexible learning environments that activate your students’ individual superpowers, optimize their performance, and encourage them to take more responsibility for their own learning. During this workshop, participants will:
  • Experience interactive reading strategies and activities that develop students’ academic language and literacy skills.
  • Explore performance-based projects that develop and assess students’ proficiency.
  • Experiment with free technological tools and pedagogical strategies for personalizing and supporting student learning.
  • Use flow theory to design transformative language learning experiences that are cognitively challenging, emotionally engaging, personally pertinent, and socially satisfying.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop.

Round 1

1) Form groups of 3-4.
2) Look at the picture.
3) Person A: Say 3 words to begin a story about your picture.
4) Person B: Continue the story with 3 more words.
5) Keep telling your story until time is called.

Round 2

1) Choose a spokesperson.
