Agenda

Workshop Description:

Want to make more of a difference in the lives of each of your students? Come learn from the world’s foremost superheroes how to create flexible learning environments that activate your students’ individual superpowers and encourage them to take more responsibility for their own learning. Explore how flow theory and the ACTFL 21st Century Skills Map can be used as tools for designing transformative language learning experiences that are cognitively challenging, emotionally engaging, personally pertinent, and socially satisfying. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop. Wireless internet access will be provided.

Guiding Questions:

1) Why do we find superheroes so intriguing?

2) How might we learn from our interactions with superheroes to craft more flexible learning environments and experiences that engage students in personal, transformative learning?

3) What "superpowers" does research offer to teachers and what are their limitations?

Can Dos:

I can use 21st Century skills to . . .

  • Expand my PLN
  • Craft compelling, transformative learning experiences for students
  • Develop students' proficiency in the TL

G: Q&A, Closure, & Evaluations

Concepts

  • Access (cognitive tools, expertise, information, materials, mentoring, personal learning networks, resources, social capital, technology)
  • Accountability
  • Autonomy (choice; control; decision-making; flipped classroom; gradual release of responsibility--show me, help me, let me; "personalized" learning; scaffolding; Zone of Proximal Development; voice)
  • Complexity (distributed cognition, "wicked" problems)
  • Creativity (knowledge creation, self expression, social transformation)
  • Flexibility (blended/hybrid/ubiquitous learning)
  • Identity (cognitively challenging, emotionally engaging, personally pertinent, socially/spiritually satisfying--flow, motivation)
  • Transformation (of content, self, school, community, world)
  • Transliteracy (increases access, removes boundaries--cultures, languages, tools)

Premises & Principles

The world needs flexible thinkers who can learn quickly, frame problems creatively, and work together collaboratively

Learning should be personally meaningful and move learners to social action in ways that transform society.

"'Personalized' learning is something that we do to kids; 'personal' learning is something they do for themselves." - Will Richardson

Process

  • Establish the Environment
  • Craft the Community
  • Assess the Abilities
  • Identify the Needs
  • Generate the Goals
  • Connect with Content & Collaborators
  • Determine the Tasks
  • Evolve the Experience
  • Monitor the Process
  • Scaffold/Support the Student
  • Celebrate Successes
  • Evaluate the Experience
